This summer, Creative Time is heading back out to Far Rockaway to host its second annual Artist Sandcastle Competition! on Friday, August 9th. Aa group of ten selected artists and their teams will gather on the sand near the Beach 86th Street boardwalk on Rockaway Beach, in Queens, to battle it out for special prizes from esteemed judges. The day will kick off at noon with sunbathing and beach fun; castle building will start at 2:00PM and judging and prizes at 5:00PM. At 6:00PM, the party will move from the beach to the boardwalk for burgers, beer, and a dance party at Rippers. Local food vendor favorites —including Caracas, Citysticks, DiCosmo’s Italian Ice, The Big Banana with Rockaway Taco, and more—will be onsite throughout the day to keep artists and audience alike well provisioned with summer snacks and refreshments. This event, which is sponsored by Melissa Shoes and Société Perrier with support from Rockabus and Veggie Island, is free and open to members of the public of all ages; children and families are encouraged to attend!
This year’s participating artists are: David Brooks, Sebastian Errazuriz, Ghost of a Dream (Lauren Was & Adam Eckstrom), Jamie Isenstein, Natalie Jeremijenko, Esperanza Mayobre, Rachel Owens, Duke Riley, Christopher Robbins, and Marc Andre Robinson. Judges include Shelley Fox Aarons, Waris Ahluwalia, Klaus Biesenbach, 2012 winners Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, and Dana Farouki. Creative Time Chief Curator Nato Thompson will serve as master of ceremonies. After-party music will be provided by DJ Lucas Walters of Tutu’s in Bushwick.
While Creative Time is known for presenting serious, ambitious public art projects, they also love to hang out with artists and bring diverse communities together for a day of classic summer fun!
