Now on view at 247365, Two & Two is an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by Brooklyn based artist Henry Gunderson. The paintings included in the exhibition are diagrammatic, and at first appear to be exploded views of reasonable systems, with their meticulously rendered components equally carefully labeled. A second look reveals a wrench (or two) in the machine. At times the components, noted within the titles of the paintings, seem reasonable or practical for use within these invented systems, and at times their presence is quite mysterious. The relationships between components, which might first read as concrete, physical, or logical, become ambiguous as one considers the possibilities. Gunderson also presents a group of sculptures with electronic components; these radios, clocks, etc. are given a minimal visual treatment, appearing as generic and arbitrary forms of technology. The workings of these devices are enclosed, and surely the practical workings of a real system cannot compare to the fantastic situations Gunderson proposes in the paintings on view.
