“Sounds of the West: Rituals and Myths in the Making” is an upcoming body of work by Josh Short that will be made the Spring of 2014 and will culminate in a solo exhibition at the Salina Art Center, Kansas. This project involves months of touring the United States, capturing sounds, two artist residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative arts and the Salina Art Center, and the creation sonic sculptures that consider uniquely American rituals and myth. Much of Shorts’s previous work has centered around concepts of DIY, the “American Dream”  aesthetic, survival, the Apocalypse, and the sublime. Short’s art practice has also been heavily influenced by American music; the blues, sludge metal, punk, which informed many of his projects including; Pirate radio installations, sound performances, sonic based sculpture, and immersive installation. The goal of “Sounds of the West” is to explore a range of American Myth and Rituals through the marriage of sound and sculpture.
