September 9 – October 29, 2016

Now on view at Jessica Silverman Gallery, 1960s Portal Paintings is an exhibition of early work by Suzanne Blank Redstone. In 1966, Redstone decided to paint only with 90- and 45-degree angles in gray, white, and primary color acrylics as a reaction to abstract expressionism, the dominant movement of the time. Redstone produced the Portal series between 1966 and 1969, beginning with a series of sketches and small-scale works on paper. The earlier paintings are distinctly hard-edged, becoming softer and more painterly over the course of the series. Including cloudy skies in a number of the paintings, Redstone suggests that the works are “openings and places to venture into.”

An essay by Jenni Sorkin on 1960s Portal Paintings is available on the Jessica Silverman Gallery website.
