September 8 – November 19, 2016

Now on view at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Derelicts is an exhibition of work by Howard Fried, featuring a new architectural installation in Fried’s series Derelict (1974-1983). This new work, Derelict V (2016), is presented alongside components and materials from the four previous works in the series, in which Fried transforms the same simple tableau—a coffee cup on a formica table—with dramatic shifts of scale and perspective. Derelict V references details of the original work in the series, installed at San Jose State University’s art gallery in 1974, with a number of modifications. The exhibition also includes two early videos by Fried: Condom (1975) and Intraction (1973).
